On the Road: Walker x Coopers golfing across Australia
Article By Glenn Walker & Photos by Andrew Peters
The Nullarbor Plain is an iconic Australian landscape characterised by its vast, treeless expanses and breathtaking views. This remote region provides an unforgettable backdrop for an extraordinary golf journey. The Nullarbor Links stretches an impressive 1,365 kilometers (about 848 miles) of Highway 1 from Ceduna in South Australia to Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, making it the longest golf course in the world.
Back in August, we got the call from Coopers Brewery to take a team of golfers across the Nullarbor to document the landscape, play 18 holes, and enjoy some cold tins. When you're setting out to drive 1365KMs in the car over seven days, you want to ensure you have the seats filled with chilled, experienced travelers. Fortunately for us, veteran road warriors Cameron Avery and Andrew Peters answered the call, joining us from LA.
Playing the Nullarbor Links is more than just hitting a ball for 18 holes; it’s about embracing the spirit of adventure. The unique feature of the world's longest and potentially toughest golf course is that each hole is set against a unique landscape, ranging from coastal views to bushland and even the very edge of Australia. The course incorporates 18 holes, with each hole located in a different town or truck stop along the route.
Some of the feature holes on these outback links are Windmills, Wombat Hole, Dingo’s Den, Nullarbor Nymph, Skylab, and Golden Mile. With a mix of short par threes, drivable par fours, and two beautiful holes on the famous Kalgoorlie Golf Course, you get to play all the shots.
As you travel between holes, you’ll experience the vastness of the outback, encountering rare wildlife and breathtaking scenery. Be prepared for some never-before-played lies—wind and rocky terrain that tests even the most skilled players. Your short game and putting will need to be on to save the score.
Aside from the golf, the Nullarbor Links takes you to some of the most special towns and truck stops Australia has to offer. From the quirky roadside attractions to the warm hospitality of the locals, each stop adds a rich layer to the journey. Whether it’s sharing a laugh with a truckie at a roadhouse or discovering hidden gems in tiny outback towns, these experiences enhance the adventure and create lasting memories.
So, if you’re looking for a golf experience that combines stunning landscapes, a challenge, and unforgettable adventures, the Nullarbor Links should be at the top of your list. Thanks to Cameron & Andrew for coming on this journey, and to Coopers for making it all possible.
We hope to see you on the road—where the next adventure awaits.
